Industrial controls engineering is the discipline that makes a physical process controllable: the design of the control system, the code that runs it, the panels and field wiring that carry it, and the testing that proves it does what the design intended. Black Box Engineering does all four, on the same project, with the same team.
That matters because most of the risk in a controls project lives in the seams. A design house hands off to an integrator, who hands off to a panel shop, who hands off to whoever is on site at commissioning — and every handoff is a chance for design intent to be lost. We are structured to remove those seams rather than to manage them.

The technical ground we work on
Being specific is the point. A controls engineer reading a vendor page can tell in one paragraph whether the writer has been on a site.
- Platforms — Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider Electric, ABB and equivalents, selected for what the site already runs rather than for what we prefer to sell.
- Supervisory — HMI and SCADA development, historian configuration, alarm rationalisation.
- Industrial networks — EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, OPC UA. Segmentation and architecture for operational-technology environments, with IEC 62443 as the reference frame.
- Electrical — power distribution, grounding, conduit and cable tray routing, load calculations, short-circuit and arc-flash study support, to NEC, NFPA 70E and Mexican NOM standards.
- Design tooling — AutoCAD and EPLAN for controls and electrical deliverables; Revit and Navisworks where the project is modelled.
Where it applies
Controls engineering is one discipline applied to very different consequences of failure.
- Mission-critical infrastructure — data centres, hospitals, telecom. Downtime carries operational and regulatory consequences, and commissioning is evidence, not a formality.
- Industrial manufacturing — process control, machine integration, production line automation.
- Materials handling and logistics — conveyor, sortation, warehouse and distribution centre controls.
- Process facilities — batch and continuous control, instrumentation, plant supervisory layers.
- Food and beverage — hygienic design constraints, traceability, changeover.
- Oil and gas — upstream, midstream and downstream controls including well monitoring, pipeline supervisory systems and terminal automation.
How we work
Senior-led, not senior-sold. The engineer who scopes the work is on the project. For a firm our size that is a structural choice rather than a slogan — we would rather decline a scope than staff it with people who have not done it.
Design intent is the thread. Every deliverable traces back to the approved basis of design, and commissioning verifies against that same document. It is the cheapest way to keep rework out of a project and the only way to make turnover mean anything.
We say what we will sign for. Scope we own, we own end to end. Scope that belongs to someone else — a build-to-print package, an owner's standard, a third party's design — we execute against faithfully and say so plainly. Knowing which is which is most of what makes a controls partner safe to hire.
Bilingual delivery. We work and document in Spanish and English. On cross-border projects that is not a convenience — it is what keeps an operator in Monterrey and a program manager in Texas reading the same control narrative.
