    Controls Electrical Installation

The control, signal and network wiring of a controls scope, installed to drawings our own engineers wrote — and checked by them before anything is energized.

Most of the problems that surface at start-up were installed, not designed: a termination that does not match the wire list, a cable shield grounded at both ends, an analog signal run in the same tray as the drive cable that is about to corrupt it. Black Box Engineering installs the low-voltage control and communications wiring that belongs to a controls and automation scope, so the package that leaves engineering is the package that gets built.

    Installed and designed to

    • NOM-001-SEDE
    • NEC
    • NFPA 70E

    What we install

    • Control and instrument wiring — control circuits, I/O and instrument wiring, pulled and terminated to the termination schedule and labeled to the wire list.
    • Network and communications cabling — industrial Ethernet and fieldbus cabling between panels, remote I/O, drives and field devices, terminated and verified.
    • Conduit and cable tray — for control, signal and network cabling, routed to the drawings and kept separated from power wiring the way the design calls for.
    • Panels on site — setting and anchoring the control panels we build, or the ones you supply, and landing the field control and network wiring.
    • Field devices and instruments — mounting and wiring sensors, photo-eyes, push-button stations, instruments and remote I/O enclosures.
    • Shielding and control-system grounding — shield terminations and grounding done the way the design specifies, which is where most signal noise problems start.
    • Verification and turnover — point-to-point checks against the drawings before anything is energized, and as-built drawings at turnover.

How we deliver installation on each side of the border

In Mexico, we install. The work is done by our own technicians or by subcontractors under our supervision, depending on the size and location of the job, and an engineer from our side owns the result either way.

In the United States, a licensed electrical contractor performs the installation. Our scope there is the engineering and the installation package — conduit and tray routing, cable schedules, wire lists and termination schedules — plus the panels, on-site supervision and coordination with the contractor, and the checkout and commissioning once the work is in.

The difference is who holds the tools, not who owns the outcome. In both countries the commissioning engineer works from the same package the installer did.

    The standards we install to

In Mexico, installation is done to NOM-001-SEDE. In the United States, the design and the installation package are prepared to NEC. Work on equipment that is energized, or about to be, follows NFPA 70E practice — lockout, approach boundaries, and the order things are energized in.

Why the engineers who drew it should check it

A third-party installer checks that the wire is landed. An engineer who wrote the logic checks that the wire is landed where the program expects it. On our scopes, point-to-point verification is done by the people who will commission the system, which is why problems turn up at checkout instead of at start-up.

Where the electrical is modeled, the routing in the field matches the routing in the model, because the people who modeled it are the people who install or supervise it.

    What we do not claim

We are not a licensed electrical contractor in the United States, and we do not present ourselves as one.

We name no clients or sites. Our engineers work under confidentiality agreements on other companies' programs. If you need references, ask and we will arrange what our agreements allow.

Talk to us about an installation scope

Mexico City based, working across North America. Tell us where the site is, what is being installed and when it has to be energized — and we will tell you how we would deliver it and what it takes.

    Frequently asked

    What people ask us first

Do you do electrical installation in Mexico?
Yes, for controls scopes. In Mexico we install the low-voltage control, signal and network cabling and the conduit and tray it runs in, set panels and mount field devices, with our own technicians or supervised subcontractors, to NOM-001-SEDE.
Do you do electrical installation in the United States?
Not as the installer. On US sites a licensed electrical contractor performs the installation, and we are not one. We supply the engineering and installation package, the panels, on-site supervision and coordination, and checkout and commissioning.
Who checks the installation before it is energized?
The engineers who will commission the system. Point-to-point verification against the drawings is done by the people who wrote the logic, so a wire landed where the program does not expect it is found at checkout, not at start-up.
