Data centers, colocation and hyperscale environments run to a different standard than industrial plants. The equipment is not exotic — switchgear, generators, UPS, chillers, air handling. What is exotic is the tolerance: the work happens inside a live building, under change control, with a witness who will not sign until the test proves what it says it proves.
That is the part most controls firms underestimate. Not the design. The discipline around it.

The standards we work to
Commissioning here follows the levels the industry already recognizes — factory acceptance, site acceptance, point-to-point, functional performance, and integrated systems testing — with documentation written to be audited rather than filed. Our commissioning approach is aligned to Uptime Institute Tier definitions for redundancy and concurrent maintainability, and to the client's own commissioning specification where one exists, which in this sector it usually does and is usually stricter.
We work to those standards. We do not hold Uptime Institute accreditation, and we will tell you that in the first conversation rather than the third.
Who does the work
Our senior leadership brings more than five years of data-center and mission-critical delivery, and our engineers have commissioned mission-critical facilities — including experience on AVEVA and Ignition platforms alongside Allen-Bradley and Siemens control systems.
Black Box Engineering is a young firm and we are direct about what that means: the depth here is in the people, built on programs they delivered before this company existed. We would rather say that plainly than imply a corporate track record we have not yet accumulated. What you are buying is the engineer on the job, which is what you were assessing anyway.
Why a controls firm, not a general contractor
Mission-critical commissioning is usually sold by people who do not write the logic. When the integrated test fails at two in the morning, the difference between a firm that can read the code and a firm that has to phone someone is the difference between a fix and a delay.
We write the sequences, we build the panels, and we are in the room when they are tested. There is no handoff in the middle where the knowledge falls out.
